King's Plot is a strategic chess capture puzzle template built with Phaser 4 + TypeScript. In this unique game, pawns move only by capturing, and the King must survive as the last piece. Plan your capture chains and conquer procedurally generated puzzles that are always solvable.

Core Gameplay

The core gameplay revolves around capture-only movement. Every piece moves by capturing an opponent's piece, never moving to an empty tile. Rooks slide orthogonally, Bishops slide diagonally, Queens slide both ways, Knights jump in an L shape, and the King steps one tile in any direction. The King is invulnerable and can never be captured. Your objective is to clear the board piece by piece until only the King remains to win the level.

A key mechanic is the King's Queen exclusivity rule. Only the King can capture a Queen, so you must time your approach and maintain control of the board until the final strike. The King's Lock rule adds another layer of strategy. The pawn that just moved is locked (dimmed) until another pawn moves, forcing you to alternate pieces and plan multi-step capture sequences ahead.

Level Design and Features

Optional King's Star collectibles appear on select levels. Capturing the star is never required to win, but star levels are guaranteed to remain solvable even after capturing it. A smart hint system provides guidance. The hint button computes the recommended next capture using the same deterministic solver that generated the level, ensuring the hint always aligns with the puzzle and warns you when a board becomes unsolvable.

The game includes undo and reset functionality. Undo restores the last captured pawn and your move history; reset restarts the board whenever you reach a dead end. A tutorial and progression system guide you through the mechanics. Six guided levels teach every mechanic with a tap-me hand, live guidance, and wrong-attempt lessons. Progress unlocks new levels, and cleared levels grant hint/undo credits.

Procedural Level Generation

The game features a robust procedural level generator. Boards range from 4x4 to 8x8 and are generated from a seed with guaranteed solvability. Difficulty scores range from very-easy to insane, and you can customize star and Queen presence.

The one-command CLI (npm run levels:generate) regenerates a full level set, tunes board size, piece pool, difficulty band, and writes ready-to-import TypeScript. Difficulty is measured using real graph metrics (minimum move count, branching, dead-end rate, solution count) normalized into a 0-100 score mapped to six bands: very-easy, easy, medium, hard, expert, insane.

Validation is built-in. Hand-authored levels can be verified with the same solver (-validate), and the in-game hint system runs the identical solver, guaranteeing that hints always agree with the generated puzzles.
